Three weeks ago, I gave a report on this conference held on 16th to 19th February 2009. Now we have the impressions of one of the delegates, Eugene Lau, who works as a dining team member of the A&W Petaling Jaya Drive-in.
I had the privilege to attend the abovementioned conference under the kind sponsorship of Kiwanis Club of Metro Kuala Lumpur, parent body for AKTION CLUB (for persons with learning disabilities who are mainly their ex -trainees) I was there as their representative as currently I am the Treasurer for this term. This conference was co-organized by Mutiara Voice Club and Asia Community Service. Being present at this Conference gave me the chance to meet up with some old faces including those who served on the Special Olympics Input Council. The whole event was smoothly run. I had the honor of getting former De Facto Law Minister, Senator Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to autograph my conference book together with the other participants after his keynote speech. I managed to catch up both Datuk Shamsiah and Maniam Sinnasamy, whom I have not met since leaving United Voice. Had a short discussion with both of them which were very inspiring. I nearly broke down at Jian Wen’ s speech when I mentioned that almost all of the hard work of networking had come to nothing as some people still discriminate against Persons with Learning Disabilities and that we needed to change the method of raising public awareness during Q&A.
Parting was heartbreaking for the MVC members who didn’t want us to leave.
We told them that we would meet again soon.
All in, it was fun and exciting and I enjoyed myself. I was unlucky not win anything at Dinner and Dance.
The next Conference is in 2011 in Perak Darul Ridzuan and organized by Bethany Home.
