More than 1.1 billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water and some 2.9 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. This results in the spreading of infectious diseases, including childhood diarrhoea, which in turn are major causes of malnutrition.
One example of this horrific situation is 14-year old Savitha. She lives in a parched area in the Mewat region, only an hour’s drive away from New Delhi. There is no electricity or running water in her village. Every day she has to walk over 2 km to get to the nearest water source. Once there, she fills a heavy clay jar and carries it all the way back home on her head.
“Heavenly Father, I thank you so much for this refreshing shower. I bring to you the billions of people without safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. I pray earnestly for the local councils, the local governments, foreign governments, NGOs and the United Nations that they will speedily remedy this desperate situation. May those living in such poverty receive both running water and also the living water which only Jesus Christ can give.” Amen.
