Social Injustice

Although the word translated INJUSTICE is only used 10 times in the New International Version of the Bible, the references have vital lessons for us to learn about this relevant subject.

1. With the Lord our God, there is no injustice

In the message of king Jehoshaphat to his judges, we have one of the most amazing reasons as to why not only the judges, but also we ourselves, should act justly

6 He told them, “Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for man but for the LORD, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7 Now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Judge carefully, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.” (2 Chronicles 19:6-7, NIV)

2. The widespread evil of social injustice

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge uprightly among men? 2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth. (Psalm 58: 1-2, NIV)

9He answered me, “The sin of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The LORD has forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.’ (Ezekiel 9:9, NIV)

‘A poor man’s field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away’ (Proverbs 13: 23)

3. A complaint to God about social injustice

The prophet Habakkuk (maybe like us!) makes a complaint to God :

2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?

3 Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.

4 Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted. (Habakkuk 1:2-4)

(If you want to know God’s answer read verses 5 – 11!)

4. God opposes social injustice

Eliphaz tells Job: 15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. 16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. (Job 5: 15 -16, NIV)

5. God commands us to combat social injustice

6Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
(Isaiah 58: 6-7, NIV)

6. The perpetrators of social injustice cannot escape God’s punishment

6They plot injustice and say,
“We have devised a perfect plan!”
Surely the mind and heart of man are cunning.

7 But God will shoot them with arrows;
suddenly they will be struck down.

8 He will turn their own tongues against them
and bring them to ruin;
all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
(Psalm 64:6-8, NIV)

‘Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked.’ Everyone, sooner or later, will reap what he or she sows.
