Burdens – (2) bearing burdens

25 July 2011 By Peter Young | TinyURL TM

1. Our Divine Burden Bearer

We must hand our burdens – spiritual, physical, mental, social and volitional – to the Lord, who is always waiting to receive them.

Psalm 68:19, NIV
19 Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
who daily bears our burdens.

Matthew 11:28-30, NIV
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

1 John 5 : 3-5, NIV
3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

The burdens we give to the Lord are light compared to the burden Jesus Christ bore on the cross when he took the punishment of the sins of the whole world. However, there are references and examples in the Bible that Christians will be persecuted and martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, having handed over our burden to the Lord, we so often take it back again! Thus, for many of us, casting our burdens on the Lord may be a daily procedure.

2. Bearing Each Other’s Burden

Galatians 6 : 2, NIV
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Even when we have handed over our burdens to the Lord, we may also need to share it with a trusted Christian leader or friend. We too should be available to carry the burdens of others. In both cases, STRICT CONFIDENCE is of utmost importance. Someone else’s burden cannot be shared with husband or wife without that person’s permission.

3. The Burdens of Our Former Religion

Galatians 5:1, NIV
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

This is especially relevant to new believers in Jesus Christ who have just left their former religion. They are warned not to take up again the burdens of that religion.
