Every day we hear of, read about or even see the horrors and tragedies that are taking place throughout the world. To offset this, we need a strong dose of God’s love. And so for three weeks, we shall examine how God’s love 1) Expresses 2) Edifies and 3) Expels.
1. THE FATHER’S LOVE IS EXPRESSED
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Note that this love is unconditional. God loves each person in the world inspite of his or her sinfulness.
2. THE SON’S LOVE IS EXPRESSED
Ephesians 5:1-2
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE EXPRESSION OF GOD’S LOVE
Romans 5:5
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
4. GOD’S LOVE MUST BE EXPRESSED THROUGH US
Matthew 22:27-30
Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ’Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
1 John 3:16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
Matthew 5:43-46
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?”
