41. The privilege of choice

31 October 2011 By Peter Young | TinyURL TM

God has given us a mind and a will so that we can think and make choices. For many Malaysians, especially those living and working in urban areas, just a few of these choices include:

1. Food and beverage
2. Clothing
3. Career training
4. Employment
5. Residence
6. Leisure activities
7. Life partner/friends
8. The ballot box

There are, of course, exceptions to the above list. We do not choose the family into which we were born or our gender. However, I would give special mention to two other exceptions – death and religion. Leaving aside suicide and euthanasia, the time for our departure from this world is in God’s hands. With regards to religion, the majority of Malaysians neither have the privilege nor the desire of choosing their religion. Unlike death, this denial of a fundamental freedom of choice cannot be attributed to God, the Father of Jesus Christ.
