ROLE MODELS

Many people (especially teenagers!) have role models whom they imitate to a lesser or greater degree. If the role model is a family member, teacher or fellow worker, that person, though influential, will probably never be in the limelight. However, if the role model is successful in fields such as business, literature, drama, entertainment, sports, politics or religion (to mention just a few), there may be thousands or millions of people who will hold such a celebrity in high esteem.

Christian leaders are a prime target of the devil, for obvious reasons. The devil’s aim is to discredit such leaders so that the name of Jesus Christ is dishonoured.

All role models (including Christians!) are human. Thus their thoughts, words and actions will not always be pleasing to the Lord. Not many Christian leaders would dare emulate Paul when he wrote to the Christian leaders in Corinth: “Follow my example, as I follow Christ.” (1 Corinthians 12:1). It is more likely that they would say to those they are influencing: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and protector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

Jesus Christ is the only sinless role model. He will never fail his followers, even though we fail him so often.
