Sponsored by Aliran Kesedaran Negara, Benar for Free and Fair Media , Centre for Independent Journalism, Civil Rights Committee, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Civil Society Initiative for Parliamentary Reform, Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Youth Section, Malaysia Youth and Student Democratic Movement, National Alliance of Bloggers, People’s Parliament, Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti, Selangor, Sisters in Islam, Suara Rakyat Malaysia and Writer Alliance for Media Independence, this memorandum will be submitted to national and state leaders on October 27, 2008.
To help us focus on the question posed by the title, the memorandum highlights several issues:
- The censorship of the internet
- The banning of books
- The inprisonment of 66 individuals under the ISA
- The corruption that flourish under the OSA
The question raised, “Are we a free nation?” and the issues highlighted are pertinent to our consideration of “Citizenship” and our reflection in these two months centering around Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day. Do take time to read the memorandum and endorse it if you agree with what it says.
