REPEAL – AMEND – ABOLISH – EYEWASH- REPEAL- AMEND – ABOLISH – EYEWASH – REPEAL
On 15 September 2011, the nation was taken by surprise when the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced ISA will be abolished and the 3 declaration of Emergency will be lifted which will be also the end for the Emergency Ordinance Law .
This means 2 draconian laws will go and Malaysians are more free now ? Will Malaysians be really free from ISA and EO? What will be status of the 30++ detainees in ISA and 6000++ detainees under EO? Is this for real or just an Election Gimmick ?
Furthermore, the PM also announced, 2 more laws will be enacted! Will the new 2 laws be a replica of the old one or will it consider the Human Rights Dimension since these laws have over the years been used as an arsenal of the ruling party and the police force.
These and many more unanswered questions are playing in the mind of the Malaysian people . Thus PSM , SUARAM, Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) and SCAH; Civil Rights Committee are jointly organizing a forum to try to look at the issues that will crop up after the repeal and also give analysis whether this is for real .

Strengthening Democratic Institutions & Human Rights Compliance in Malaysia, Towards the 13th General Election & Electing Human Rights Friendly MPs
Date: September 28, 2011 (Wednesday)
Time: 9.30am till 12.30pm (followed by lunch)
Venue: Parliament House – Meeting room
The Prime Minister’s recent announcement for pro human rights democracy is a welcome change. While Malaysians have been casting their votes in general elections since independence, active participation of citizens in the democratic process has been curtailed by many laws which restrict human rights and fundamental liberties. Change towards a pro human rights democracy is only possible if members elected to parliament share common understanding and appreciation for human rights
One simple indicator to ascertain Parliamentary commitment towards human rights is for the setting aside of a specific time to discuss the Suhakam Human Rights report. In addition the establishment of a permanent parliamentary select committees on human rights is essential to review abuses of power and violations of human rights.
On our statutes are numerous pieces of legislations which are against the fundamental principles of the Universal declaration of Human Rights and also against the spirit of the Federal Constitution especially the section on Fundamental liberties. Furthermore Malaysia has not ratified the major UN conventions pertaining to civil and political rights on the one hand and the socio-economic and cultural rights on the other.
There is therefore an urgent need to review the current role played by Members of Parliaments and to chart out a commitment pledge for aspiring parliamentarians seeking elections in the 13th General Elections
Proham firmly believes that there must be definitive steps taken to repeal and amend all current legislation which is inconsistent with human rights and institute stronger mechanism for enhancing democratization of Malaysian society.
